A loud, fiery fisherman whom Jesus called a “Son of Thunder” — and the first apostle to give his life for Christ.
James was strong and loud and full of heart. He worked by the sea with his father and his little brother John. James had big muscles and an even bigger voice. When he believed something, it burned like fire inside him.
One ordinary day by the water, Jesus came walking by. He looked at James and John and said: “Follow Me.” James dropped his net, left his boat, and walked into the biggest adventure of his life.
James saw water turn into wine. He saw storms stop when Jesus spoke. Jesus invited him to special moments — like the day He stood glowing like the sun on the mountaintop. James didn’t understand it all yet. But he believed.
One day, a village was unkind to Jesus. James got mad and shouted, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from Heaven!?” Jesus turned and gently said no. That’s why Jesus gave him and his brother a nickname: “Sons of Thunder.” It wasn’t a tease. It was a promise: “I know your fire. And I’ll teach you how to use it with love.”
After Jesus rose, James kept preaching with that same fire — but now it burned with love and courage. He became the first apostle to give his life for Jesus. Today, pilgrims walk a special path in Spain called “The Way of Saint James.” James started as a thunderstorm. He ended as a light.
Thought for the heart. Jesus doesn’t take away our fire. He teaches us how to shine with it.
A child’s prayer. Dear Saint James, sometimes I feel loud or strong inside. Teach me how to use that fire with love. Help me to follow Jesus with all my heart, even when it’s hard. Amen.
