There were two apostles named James. One was loud and bold — James the Greater. The other was quiet and steady — James the Lesser. “Lesser” didn’t mean less important. It just meant younger, or maybe smaller. But in God’s eyes, James the Lesser was just as loved.
James didn’t speak much. We don’t have many of his words in the Bible. But he listened. He loved Jesus. And sometimes, being faithful without needing attention is the greatest gift of all.
When Jesus said, “Follow Me” — James said yes. He walked the dusty roads. He saw the miracles. He sat beside the others as Jesus spoke of Heaven, forgiveness, and love. And even when things got hard, he stayed close.
After Jesus rose, James became a leader of the Church in Jerusalem. He didn’t shout. He didn’t travel far. But he taught with love. He prayed with care. One story says he prayed so much in the Temple that his knees grew rough as a camel’s — from kneeling.
Quiet strength. Gentle devotion. Steady love. That was James. When trouble came, he did not run. He gave his life for Jesus with peace on his face. His story is a soft one. Not loud. Not famous. But it matters — because God sees the quiet hearts, too.
Thought for the heart. You don’t have to be loud to be strong. God loves quiet hearts that stay faithful.
A child’s prayer. Dear Saint James, thank you for being steady and true. Help me remember that I don’t have to be the biggest or the best — just full of love. Teach me to follow Jesus in small ways, every single day. Amen.
