The youngest apostle, who stayed at the foot of the Cross, and to whom Jesus gave Mary as Mother.
John was the youngest of all the apostles. Some say he was still just a teenager when Jesus called him. He had a quiet heart, one that listened carefully. When Jesus said, “Follow Me,” John stood up right away. He didn’t ask, “Where are we going?” He just followed.
John saw everything. He watched Jesus heal, forgive, bless, and teach. At the very last supper, John sat beside Jesus and leaned his head gently against His shoulder, close enough to hear His heartbeat. He didn’t speak loudly. He didn’t lead the table. But he stayed close.
That night, soldiers came. All Jesus’ friends ran. But John didn’t go far. He followed. He stayed. He walked with Mary, Jesus’ mother, all the way to the Cross. While others hid, John stood right there at the foot of the Cross — heart shaking, eyes full of tears, but still there.
And when Jesus saw him, He looked at Mary too, and said: “Woman, this is your son. John, this is your mother.” Even in pain, Jesus gave John a gift: a new family. From that day on, John cared for Mary like his own mother.
John became known as “the Beloved Disciple.” Not because he was perfect, not because he was loud — but because he stayed close to Jesus, always.
Thought for the heart. Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is stay.
A child’s prayer. Dear Saint John, thank you for loving Jesus so deeply. Help me to stay close to Him, too — in quiet ways, in kind ways, in brave ways. Teach me how to love others like He did. Amen.
