A thoughtful apostle who said yes to Jesus and brought his friend Nathanael along: “Come and see.”
Philip was one of the very first people Jesus called. He wasn’t loud like Peter, or fiery like James. Philip was thoughtful. He liked to think things through. But when Jesus said, “Follow Me,” Philip said yes — with his heart wide open.
The very first thing Philip did? He ran to find his friend Nathanael. “We’ve found Him! The one Moses and the prophets talked about — Jesus of Nazareth!” Nathanael wasn’t so sure. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” he asked. Philip didn’t argue. He simply said something gentle and full of faith: “Come and see.”
That was the kind of person Philip was. He brought people in. He pointed them toward Jesus. Even if he didn’t have all the answers — he brought people to the One who did.
One day, Jesus said, “You know the way to the place I am going.” Philip tilted his head and asked: “Lord… show us the Father. That will be enough.” Jesus looked at him with love and said: “Have I been with you all this time… and still you don’t know Me? Whoever has seen Me has seen the Father.” And in that moment, something deep clicked in Philip’s heart.
After Jesus rose, Philip kept walking in faith. He met a traveller from a faraway land reading the Scriptures, sat beside him, and gently explained how it all pointed to Jesus. The man asked to be baptised right there, in the middle of the road.
Thought for the heart. Sometimes the best thing you can say is: “Come and see.”
A child’s prayer. Dear Saint Philip, thank you for asking good questions. Help me to be honest, gentle, and curious — and to always lead others closer to Jesus. Even when I don’t know everything, help me say, “Come and see.” Amen.
