Saint Thomas — The Brave Who Asked

Song of the Angels — William-Adolphe Bouguereau, 1881

A loyal friend who needed to see for himself — and met the risen Jesus, and called Him “My Lord and my God.”

Thomas loved Jesus with all his heart. He followed Him through hills and villages, listened to His parables, saw miracles happen right before his eyes. But Thomas wasn’t the kind of person who believed something just because. He wanted to understand. He wanted to be sure. He wanted to touch the truth.

One day, Jesus told the disciples He was going to prepare a place for them. “You know the way to where I am going,” He said. Thomas raised his hand. “Lord, we don’t know where You’re going. How can we know the way?” And Jesus gave him a beautiful answer: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.”

Then came the Cross. Jesus was taken away. He died. And everything Thomas believed felt like it broke into pieces. The disciples gathered together in fear and sorrow. But Thomas wasn’t with them when Jesus first came back.

Later, they told him: “We’ve seen the Lord!” Thomas couldn’t believe it. “Unless I see the nail marks… unless I touch His hands and side… I won’t believe it.” He wasn’t being mean. He was hurting. He needed to see for himself.

Eight days later, Jesus came again. This time — Thomas was there. Jesus looked at him gently and said: “Thomas, come. Touch My hands. Place your hand on My side. Don’t doubt. Believe.” Thomas didn’t even need to touch Him. He fell to his knees and whispered: “My Lord and my God.” From that day on, Thomas never turned back. Some say he travelled all the way to India.

Thought for the heart. Jesus never turns away from questions. He turns them into faith.

A child’s prayer. Dear Saint Thomas, sometimes I have doubts, too. Help me to bring them to Jesus, not hide them. Thank you for showing that faith can grow — even through sadness and fear. I believe, even when I can’t see. Amen.
