The Immaculate Heart of Mary

For more than three centuries, the Church has known a quiet path of giving oneself entirely to Christ through his Mother. Saint Louis de Montfort gave it to us. He called it True Devotion. Today we usually call it the Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary.

The path is simple. Thirty-three short days of preparation, a few minutes each day with a small book, a video, or a printed plan. At the end, a quiet act of consecration. A giving of yourself entirely to Christ, and asking Mary to be your teacher and your way to him.

Many Catholics around the world are beginning today. Those who finish will make their consecration on 13 June, the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the anniversary of the second apparition at Fatima. The timing is no accident.

The four weeks of preparation

Saint Louis de Montfort gave the 33 days a gentle shape:

  • Days 1 to 12, Renouncing the spirit of the world. A quiet honesty about what holds us, and a turning toward Christ.
  • Days 13 to 19, Knowledge of self. Looking at our own poverty before God, without shame.
  • Days 20 to 26, Knowledge of Mary. Coming to know our Mother more deeply.
  • Days 27 to 33, Knowledge of Jesus. Letting Mary lead us closer to her Son.

And then, on the morning of 13 June, the quiet act of consecration itself.

The Act of Consecration, 13 June

On the morning of the 13th, you make the consecration itself. Most of the plans above include the prayer to use. The traditional one is by Saint Louis de Montfort himself, and is given freely in the Legion of Mary booklet linked above.

The act is simple. The grace is great.
