Pontmain, Mayenne, France · 1871
In the cold January of 1871, when the Prussian army was advancing through France and the village of Pontmain awaited the news that its men had fallen, the Mother of God appeared to four children in the dark sky over a barn. She came in silence and starlight, and gave a message that has been called by her own title at this shrine: “Our Lady of Hope.” Three days later, the Prussian advance halted and turned back. France was spared.
The Lady in the Starry Sky

On the evening of January 17, 1871, twelve-year-old Eugène Barbedette was helping his father in the barn behind their house when he stepped outside, looked up at the snowy sky, and saw a beautiful Lady standing high in the air, dressed in dark blue covered with stars, smiling at him. He called his father, who could not see her. He called his brother Joseph, who saw her at once. The grown-ups, again, saw nothing — but two small girls of the village did, and so did a small boy.
For three hours that bitter cold evening, the four children watched the Lady, who spoke not a word at first. As the villagers gathered to pray, a great oval frame of light formed around her in the sky. Within the oval, letter by letter — the children read aloud — appeared a message: “But pray, my children. God will hear you in a little while. My Son allows himself to be moved.” A small red cross appeared in her hands. She made a face of sorrow when she showed them the cross of her Son.
No adult ever saw the Lady. Yet the four children agreed in every detail. The Bishop of Laval approved the apparition in 1872. Three days after the apparition, on January 20, the German army that had been advancing on Laval halted at Le Mans and turned back. The village priest had called Pontmain the place where “Our Lady stopped the Prussians.” The shrine has been honored as Our Lady of Hope ever since.
The Sanctuary Today

A great basilica rose at Pontmain in the years after the apparition. Pilgrims have come every January 17 since — through the trenches of the First World War, through the occupation of the Second, through every season of national fear in France. The Sons of Mary Immaculate, who serve the shrine, keep the prayer in many languages.
The barn where Eugène Barbedette first looked up still stands beside the basilica. The shrine has remained, as it has been from the beginning, a place where prayer changes the course of armies — and a sanctuary for any soul awaiting news in the dark.
A Prayer at Pontmain
Our Lady of Hope, Mother of Pontmain,
you who stood in the night sky
over frightened children and a frightened country —
stand over us in the news we wait for.
Where armies march, halt them.
Where fathers do not return, comfort us.
Where hope has frozen, breathe upon it.
My Son allows himself to be moved.
Mother, move him today. Amen.
